How to wear your retainers after Invisalign

Dental care to make you smile

Our top tips for keeping your smile looking fabulous for years!

You may have been provided with fixed and/or removable retainers to hold the teeth in their new position.

Retainers are extremely important, as the teeth will relapse to their old positions if they are not retained after treatment. It is essential that the retainers are worn as directed.

If the retainers are lost, please contact the practice immediately to have them replaced before you teeth relapse.

You may have a fixed retainer fitted, it is essential this fixed retainer is checked regularly. If the fixed retainer debonds or breaks, the teeth may move into their old position.

Plastic type retainers are required in addition to a fixed wire retainer - on average, these retainers will need to be replaced every 12-18 months.

Our preference are the premium Invisalign Vivera retainers - they are stronger and more durable plus you get 3 full sets in one order! As they are made from a digital scan, they can simply be reordered at your convenience.

Ideally, the removable retainers are to be worn full time, day and night for the first 3 months.

Following this the plastic retainer must be worn for at least 12 hours per day (mostly whilst sleeping).

Please bring your retainers to every routine appointment to have them assessed!

Our advice would be to continue to wear the retainers on a lifelong basis to maintain the teeth in the corrected position. Retention for life is key!

DO NOT STOP WEARING THE RETAINERS UNLESS DIRECTED TO DO SO BY YOUR DENTIST.

Enjoy you fabulous new smile :)
