Swollen or bleeding gums can be a sign of gum inflammation, also known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is typically caused by the accumulation of plaque on your teeth and gumline. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth and can lead to gum irritation.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis - resulting in bone loss and early tooth loss.

Common causes of swollen gums include:

  1. Poor oral hygiene: Not brushing and flossing your teeth regularly can allow plaque to build up, leading to gum inflammation.
  2. Smoking, vaping or tobacco use: These habits increase the risk of gum disease.
  3. Hormonal changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those during pregnancy, can make gums more sensitive and prone to swelling.
  4. Medications: Certain medications can lead to gum problems as a side effect.
  5. Medical conditions: Some medical conditions, like diabetes, can increase the risk of gum disease.

To help stop swollen gums and prevent gum disease, you can take the following steps:

  1. Practice good oral hygiene! Including the use of interdental cleaning with brushes or floss.
  2. Use an antiseptic mouthwash to help kill bacteria and reduce inflammation. This is best used at a separate time to brushing.
  3. Visit your dentist regularly. If you suffer with gum disease, we recommend seeing out hygienist every 3 months and your dentist twice a year.
  4. Professional dental cleanings including our new AIRFLOW!
  5. Maintain a healthy diet - Consume a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.
  6. Limit sugary and starchy foods, which can contribute to plaque buildup.
  7. Quit smoking or vaping
  8. Manage underlying health conditions - always discuss with your GP first.
  9. If you have diabetes or other medical conditions, work with your healthcare provider to keep them under control.
  10. High stress levels can affect your immune system and contribute to gum problems. Practice stress-reduction techniques like relaxation and meditation.
